Restaurant Show on Saturday,
July 24, 2010
This week's PLAYBACK
Part 1:
Here’s the Scoop from the Gabby
Gourmet Restaurant Show on
Saturday, July 24, 2010.
We were at Argyll Pub at 3rd and
Clayton in Cherry Creek North.
My guests were Robert Thompson,
owner, and Sergio Romero, chef
at Argyll.
And there was a Scotch Egg
Eating contest too.
The contestants include Lori
Midson, Matty Selby, Steve
Snappin Dog, and Amanda Faison.
It was great fun.
And Stacey Rose who is visiting
Denver will be doing a
performance at the Newman Center
next Saturday night with her own
music. She is a great pianist
and will be performing with a
great orchestra. Call
303-871-7720.
The question of the day—how many
Scotch eggs did they make for
the contest—626.
The winner ate 13 eggs in 7
minutes-the runner up 10 ½. The
proceeds went to Sobriety House
and half the money for all
weekend sales of the eggs will
go as well.
Next weekend we are at the
viceroy in Snowmass-join us for
a fabulous week and away from
the city an the heat-and all
Next week on TV is street food
with the trucks!!!!! That is
Wednesday on the 11am news on
Channel 7—I come on about 11.30.
Be sure and watch.
We went to Gallop Café on 32nd &
Zuni and it is great!!! Dave and
Glen are super-owners-and turn
out the best cocktails—and super
wines at super prices. It was a
coffee house and now more.
Breakfast is incredible----eggs
bene-the best, the Sherpa which
is granola, goodies and a
poached egg, biscuits and gravy
with scrambled eggs, green
chili—then we went on toe the
Vietnamese sandwich, the
Moroccan chicken salad, Caesar,
and tomato and mozzarella
Panini---then we had forest
mushroom fettuccini-and carrot
cake and bread pudding. No
wonder we were all stuffed-but
so good. And the prices and
great and the service and guys
terrific.
Taste of the Nation was great
and they did a super job. The
restaurants and wineries were
terrific too. Congratulations to
all.
Then we went over to Sienna Wine
Bar & Small Plates on 12th &
Madison. It is charming and cute
in design—like the tiny places
in San Franscisco. The owners
are delightful. The wine list is
super with many by glass and at
nice prices. The small plates
are bite size and prepared right
behind the bar. We had the baked
brie, the tomato bruschetta
(great), the mushroom tart, the
mini (one bite) pizzas and the
Sienna salad. We missed the
cheese platter and two
sandwiches-and some desserts. It
is a really cute place to stop
in for a drink and snack.
The Gabby dinner at Root Down
was beyond incredible!!!! The
food, wine and service was
fabulous and everyone was so
thrilled. We started with choice
of gazpacho or carrot curry
soup—the best soups ever. Then
we had the tempura asparagus,
corn salad or the beet and
chevre cheese salad. The next
incredible course was your
choice of gnocchi or sweet
potato falafel—both were amazing
but the falafel are
unbelievable. Entrees came with
beef, halibut or tofu—and again,
all were perfect. Desserts
rocked with bread pudding or
chocolate budine cake---what a
great night—and wines were
wonderful too.
New Spot to try:
Park & CO. opened this week on
E. 17th & Pennsylvania. It is
the sister restaurant of Park
Burger—and it is super and
fun---and good. The place is
simple---like a burger
place—with seating at the bar,
along the sides and great patio
too. The wines were great and
reasonable—the burgers were
super-and the veggie burger too.
And we had the pretzel baked to
order-yum—and the best sweet
potato fries. There are a few
more apps and salads—and all
good. Read about it in the
August 1 webpage features.
New spot to try!
The Denver Tea Room
1820 E. Colfax
Denver
303-550-4377
This delightful spot only did
catering for parties, weddings,
birthdays, etc. and now they
have a spot for all to enjoy. It
is at the Holiday Chalet Bed &
Breakfast on the south west
corner of E. Colfax and High. As
they open they are just doing
afternoon tea but soon will add
a light lunch menu. Open Tues
thru Sun from 11-5. It’s fun to
have Margo and gang at their own
place. She still does catering
too if a bigger space is needed
but enjoy this charming tea
room.
TV with the Farmers Market was
great-the places were
terrific-all—starting with My
Mom’s Pies (the best), Crock Pot
was super, Love Grown
fabulous-you can get it at
Vitamin Cottage and Kings
too-eating it now—Irish bread
co., and white girl salsa-super
fun—and all the fabulous
produce. Watch it on TV
appearances on the page.
We went to Morton’s LoDo for
dinner and it was great. Joe is
such a delight and the staff is
incredible and been there for
years. We had super wine,
fabulous bread and then the
divine crab BLT sliders and
smoked salmon pizza. Then we had
steak and sea bass for entrees
and asparagus with balsamic and
onion rings with Thai sauce. And
then dessert was a gigantic
chocolate sundae with divine
cake in it and caramel-the
dinner was super and great fun.
The bar menu is great so stop in
there too.
The Original Pancake House still
serves some pretty darn terrific
breakfast food. We were out that
way at a dr. and stopped
by---for Swedish pancakes and
eggs over easy, and buckwheat
pancakes with a perfect poached
egg. It is simple, but so good.
Strings celebrated its 24th
birthday and we just stopped by
for a drink---lots of wine and
terrific appetizers were there
for the crowd of well wishers.
We went to Ernie’s Pizza and Bar
on 44th and Federal for
dinner-what a blast—the place is
great looking-wines and drinks
so reasonable and so good—all
Italian wine list makes for fun
too. Then we had the antipasti
platter with dips, cauliflower,
olives, nuts, meats, cheeees,
breads and more, the calamari
(huge hit), and 2 great
salads-the arugula and the beet
salad. Then we had the best
sandwiches-the Caprese and the
prosciutto with red pepper. And
then we had a huge pizza that
was really super and a divine
pasta with chicken and spinach.
We ended with great tiramisu and
gelato-specially the salty
caramel. And the wines were
great!!!
We went to Venue for dinner and
it was great-and fun. We had
nice wines at super prices,
super service, and terrific
food. We had bread and then
potato soup, the spinach salad,
and ribs to start. Then we had
salmon, oxtail cassoulet, and
pappardelle with veggies for
entrees. The food was super and
we had a great time.
The new Brunch menu at Argyll is
great!!!!
Remember the $52.80 dinner at
Strings on Sunday-4 courses for
2—or cut in half for one. And
the menus are fabulous.
Kathy loved the charity event at
Strings for Susan G. Komen. The
dinner at Root Down was
incredible. And she is very
excited about Snowmass next
week.
You can still come---and it will
be fabulous!!!!
Lydia loves Edgewater pizza.
Nancy adored the gabby dinners
in July—Barolo Grill, Yak &
Yeti, and Root Down.
We had several calls about
Argyll, and new places.
We talked about Devil’s Food for
dinner. And Gallop Café, and
Fuel, and many more places.
Thanks for listening and
calling.
