Restaurant Show on Saturday, September 12, 09
This week's PLAYBACK
Part 1:
Part 2:
Today’s show was hosted by
Steve Miller
as Gabby is on a Mediterranean cruise with husband Mark. Special guests
include
Mike Johnston
from
Savory Spice,
Margaret Ebeling
from
Larimer Square
and
Jon Schlegel
from
Snooze.
Rae called in to ask “What’s on the menu at Snooze?” Jon talked about
the great breakfast and lunch. Steve commented on the great burritos at
Snooze but the restaurant is best known for their pancakes. There are
two locations which attract all walks of life and a great place to
people watch.
There were three questions of the day:
Today’s question from Margaret: “How many people dine in Larimer Square
over the course of a year?”
Today’s question from Jon Schlegel: How many eggs does both Snooze
locations go through in a week?
Today’s question from Mike Johnston: How much curry power does Savory
Spice’s four locations sell in a year?
Call Tim from Aurora. Loves Mexican food especially
Las Delicious and
likes their burritos. He had lunch at Fuddruckers in Aurora and it was
delicious. It is still family-friendly.
Margaret talked
October Fest
is coming up next weekend in Larimer Square. Outside of beer and brats,
the wiener dog race is a big hit. Proceeds directly benefit the Colorado
Dachshund Rescue.
Laney called in from her car. To comment on
Pesce Fresco
and their great food and live music. Steve commented that Pesce Fresco
will no longer be serving lunch. Laney highly recommends it.
Margaret asked about
Savory Spice
and where would she start if creating a Mexican dish. Mike at Savory
Spice suggested starting with Mole’ flavor spices.
Ben called in and asked a question for Mike at Savory Spice and had some
great food in northern Mexico and where he would suggest a restaurant in
Denver that offers authentic northern Mexican restaurant.
Tamayo
in Larimer Square or
Pasquaros
on 32nd and Bryant would be a great place to start.
Matteo, the general manager from
Las Brisas, called in to state
that they’ve been around for 23 years but they have a new owner and
hosting a grand reopening next Thursday, September 17th. The restaurant
will give out free margaritas all weeklong starting Monday, September
14th. They have an enclosed patio called the Jungle Room and host a
Tijuana Toss on Mondays. Guess the flip of a coin correctly and enjoy
your entrée for free. Las Brisas also hosts a Ladies Night during Happy
Hour on Thursdays (Margaret said, “I’ll see you there Matteo!”.) Las
Brisas is located on South Clinton Street (I-25 and Arapahoe) in
Greenwood Village. Check out their website at
www.lasbrisascolorado.com
A caller called in to talk about the
Elliott School Café
– a student café that teaches kids to cook and learn the culinary arts.
Lydia called in to state that Steve is doing a wonderful job hosting the
show. She loves
Edgewater Pizza
on 20th and Sheridan. The pizza is fantastic and they have been there
for many years.
Harvest Week
starts today go to
www.eatdenver.com for more information.
Harvest Week features cuisine using only Colorado-grown products and
ingredients. Snooze is featuring Colorado peach pancakes, ratatouille
and gazpacho. Margret states that many Larimer Square restaurants are
hosting Harvest Week including Tag and Rioja and well as dozens more
throughout Denver.
Brenda called in from Boulder to say she wants to try
Fruition
and
Coltarra. Steve noted that
Full Belly, the bistro in Boulder,
is hosting a
Gabby Dinner. Brenda asked for
suggestions on a Highlands restaurant. Steve suggested that
Highlands Café
and
LoHi
SteakBar
are great choices. Margret commented more on LoHi, their great cuisine
and that they’ve only been around for about two months.
Steve commented on the upcoming Gabby Dinners.
complete list:
Alma called in and ate at
John’s Restaurant
in Boulder. It’s been there for about 30 years and it was just
wonderful. They have owners Chef Corey Buck and sister Ashley Maxwell
have done a great job since purchasing the restaurant 6 years ago. Alma
had the fresh tuna and scallops tempura and it was fabulous. The breads
are made fresh. John’s is reasonably priced.
Steve talked about curry and asked Mike how many curries are there?
There are over 100 ingredients which make up curries so the
possibilities are endless. Mike commented that curry is to make sauce
and the varieties of the blends are limitless. Savory Spice makes a lot
of different curries that can go in a lot of different directions. Asian
curries tend a have different levels of heat red typically being hotter
than the yellows. African curries are great on eggs. Margret has been
shopping at Savory Spice Shop for years and loves the fresh ingredients
and the knowledgeable staff. Mike commented on how customers tend to
interact and exchange recipes right there in the store.
Connie called in to say she watches Gabby on Channel 7 on
Wednesdays. The
United Chinese Restaurant
is wonderful. She likes the Edgewater Pizza place in Edgewater – next to
Sloans Lake.
Karen called in to talk about
Snooze.
She said it was delicious but it was too full and show to get a table.
She is wondering if it is always so busy. Jon apologized for the wait.
Karen was amazed on the line of people trying to get a table. There were
a lot of large parties on the day Karen came in. The meal was fabulous –
she had the pancake of the day and it was worth the wait.
Judy called in to state that she missed the talk about
LoHi
– the new steakhouse in lower Highlands. Steve commented on the great
food, incredible burgers and great value of this neighborhood place.
Judy asked about the size of the restaurant. It is a comfortable
restaurant and a neighborhood type of place with Chef Sean Kelly
preparing great dishes. Mike has been there several times.
Kathleen took Gabby’s advice and went to
Vespa Dipping Grill
and it was excellent. She also likes Edgewater Pizza. Kathleen let the
server at Vespa choose the dinner for her and it was excellent.
Margaret talked about
Tag
restaurant and Troy Guard is the chef/owner. Troy was named the chef to
represent Colorado for the NFL challenge.
Today’s winners:
Alma won Mike Johnston's Question. Savory Spice Shop sells 4,200
pounds of curry each year.
Karen of Littleton won Jon Schlegel's
Question. Snooze uses 17,000 eggs in a week
Judy of Aurora won Margret Ebeling's
Question. Larimer Square hosts 750,000 diners each year.
Thanks and enjoy a great Harvest Week
in Denver,
Mike Wheaton
