We were at Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs on E.
Colfax and Monroe for the annual qualifying for the hot dog eating
contest. Steve, of course was my guest and Mike Seader of Mike Says, my
other guest. Matty Selby of Steuben’s and Vesta was there promoting
Taste of the Nation on July 19.
And there is a taste of E. Colfax
coming on July 28—Tattered Cover has details on that.
Question of the day—how many pounds of
fried green beans does Steve’s serve in a week-254!!
The qualifiers are now in place for
the big contest on July 26 at 1pm at Steve’s—the 2 big winners ate 8 in
3 minutes.
Thursday, August 6
Matsuhisa at Elway’s Cherry Creek
1st and University
303-399-5353—ask for Jen or Lara
6pm
The fun begins at 6pm for a cocktail
reception and then, about 6.30 Matsuhisa and Elway’s will show off with
5-6 Shochu stations with each station serving one dish from Matsuhisa
and one dish from Elway’s. And it’s all about introducing you to Shochu,
the fabulous distilled sake that is awesome. Come and join the fun---and
it is a patio party, perfect for summer for amazing food and wine. Meet
the chefs from both restaurants and Sean Gallus, the guru of Shochu. The
price is $60 per person plus tax and tip.
Next week we are at the new great spot
in Cherry Creek, miniBar at 2nd and Clayton. Michele is great
and the place rocks. We are having a gabby dinner here too.
This week, on July 14, is our dinner
at Opus—along with the folks from Savory Spice adding to the fun with
their spices on the food. It will be fabulous.
The 4th continued with an
amazing dinner at Barolo Grill—they did the Tuscan 4 course dinner for
$35—and it was fabulous-the salad was incredible and so was the pate. We
also ordered the beet tart. The gnocchi were out of this world as was
the tagliatelle Bolognese!!! The white salmon was amazing and the veal
as well. And the wines were perfect as always. Service superb-it was
heavenly.
Then we went to the cupcake eating
contest on E. Colfax-the cupcakes were made by the Shoppe-it was
hysterical!!! Each of the nine contestants were given 25 cupcakes and
the time was 5 minutes. There were rules-and one guy ate all but some
crumbs!!!! And he was the skinniest person there.
We went to the new Icehouse Tavern on
18th and Wynkoop—formerly Via—and it is fabulous. James
Mazzio is the chef, the Momos still owners and the concept and décor are
great. It is a Tavern-not a bar-so the food is really good!!! The wine,
beer and specialty drink list is super-the front of the house with gm
Ermino Mantelli great. The food rocks!!! We had the skinny crispy onion
rings with bbq, the deviled crab cakes with remoulade, and the best mac
and cheese too. Then we had the chop salad, the fried chicken served
with outrageous spiced honey (yeah), a BLT with egg salad—after my own
heart, fish tacos and then the burgers star as well. We ended with a
terrific coconut cream pie. What a treat!!
If you are gonna be home, go by
Elway’s and have them pack a cherry creek salad to go!!! It is fabulous.
We went to Fresh Fish Co. for dinner
and it was so good. Our waiter was great and suggested a super wine.
Then we had cockles, the bread and then Caesar salads to start. Entrees
were the whole Maine lobster, the wild salmon, and catfish. Sides were
coleslaw, mashed sweet potatoes, mango salsa, sweet tomatoes cold and a
must have, and veggies. We all shared a slice of mud pie for dessert and
left very full-and happy!
Colore Pizzeria Moderne opened last
week on S. Broadway and Yale and the Momo’s-Venonzio and his sister have
a real winner. It is order at the counter and then they serve
you—inexpensive, and so good-with starters, salads like Caesar (we had
this one), pasta, entrees, baked pasta, pizza and desserts-and wine too.
We had penne Bolognese, vegetable lasagna, and pesto chicken white pizza
and wow—they were all so good. It is fun, welcoming and delicious—and
they have lots of parking too.
We went to India’s Pearl for dinner
and it is so fabulous!!! Food, service, wine and every detail is
perfect. Start with poppadums and sauces, then we had onion badji. We
had tandoori fish, tandoori quail, eggplant , and chicken with mango for
entrees. All come with rice and of course we had mango chutney. We ended
with chai tea and had fabulous wines as well. This is one special treat.
We were at First Thrusday at Whole
Foods Tamarac and Ian Kleinman was beyond incredible!!! He did all sorts
of great molecular tricks and the crowd loved it.
Then we went to dinner at Argyll and
had a ball. The service with Ian was fabulous as was Sergio’s cooking.
We had the best crispy potato chips, deviled eggs, and clams casino to
start. Then we had mac and cheese with seafood-next came entrees of half
chicken, wild white salmon with puttanesca, and the pork chop. Homemade
divine chocolate cake was dessert!!!
We went to Capital Tea for lunch---and
this was a real special surprise and treat. At 1450 S. Broadway-had no
idea and they are celebrating their 3rd anniversary. The
place is charming and tiny, the teas-amazing and the prices the best I
have ever seen. A tea I especially love is $10 a lb.cheaper than any
place I have seen it---and by the cup--$2-wow!!! Then thee food-the
sweets looked marvelous but we had the egg salad (divine) on dark
rye-you get a choice-grilled-your choice too-get it that way. And on
Friday the special is a perfectly cooked chicken salad with greens,
feta, tomato and more. And the sandwiches come with a small side salad
too. And the teas---well I can hardly wait to go back. They are open
tues-sat.
Totally off the subject-there is a
doggy store next door-Doggie Delights-where they are the nicest and
have everything for your baby too.
We went to Strings for
dinner-first-the happy hour is great with so many people-and then dinner
is divine—so good and such great service-and all sorts of super wines
now too—by glass and bottle!! We had Infinite Monkey-sauv. Blanc-love
it-and then the rolls, breadsticks, soft shell crab and asparagus salad
with egg and pancetta---so good. Entrees were excellent-fabulous trout,
lamb, pasta with mussels and artichoke, and linguini with shrimp, then
for dessert-cherries jubilee in a cup!! Perfect service and a perfect
night at Strings.
