Restaurant Show on Saturday,
February 27, 2010
This week's PLAYBACK
Part 1:
Here’s the Scoop from the Gabby
Gourmet Restaurant Show on
Saturday, February 27, 2010.
My guest was John Lehndorff,
food person and head of the
national pie taste off.
And John is also the head of our
taste off on March 27 that takes
place at Steve’s Snappin Dogs on
E. Colfax and Madison.
My other guest was Tom Ryan of
Smashburger who told us about
the new Colorado burger, the
sweet potato fries, and the
fried pickles and my favorite
the fried green chilis.
The question of the day: how
many burgers do they sell in one
store in a year—120,000.
We talked about restaurant
week-the pies all around and
Lehndorff’s fun, pie items-he
will host and judge the pie
cookoff on March 27—and remember
to come-you get to taste them as
well.

This will be one great treat!
Altitude at the Hyatt
Omni in the Meritage
Il Fornaio
We went to Fogo de Chao for
Restaurant week and it was
unbelievable. First they had
1425 reservations for
tonight-and every single person
was delighted. The service is
unbelievable—perfect-and the
salad bar is amazing and the
food keeps coming. It is so good
and the staff is great—what a
treat anytime. And they had some
great wines at very reasonable
prices too. And they have
complimentary valet parking.
They are part of my segment on
channel 7 on Wednesday the 24th.
What a treat!!
Nothing better than breakfast on
a snowy morning at Strings—and
lots of others thought the
same!!! We had pancakes, eggs,
and huevos-and all were
terrific—service too and lots of
casual fun there.
We went with our family to
Walk-In Burgers and it was great
fun. This is the place for a
burger, not ambience, but a
spectacular view of Sloan’s
Lake. It’s simple, affordable
and very good. The burger is
great, the veggie burger of
quinoa, beans, cheese, and
goodies is fabulous. So are the
fries-plain and sweet potato.
There are chicken sandwiches,
pulled meat and jerk chicken as
well. And lots of sauces for
dipping. Brownies and cookies
are there for dessert.
We went to see Elton John-Billy
Joel—that was the concert of the
decade-they were on stage for 3
hours-no intermission and
incredible!!!!
Before we went to the Teatro-amazing
hotel and service-and then to
Prima!!! It is so worth the
visit. There is a brand new menu
and the 5280 menu is
fantastic-the service was beyond
wonderful, the wines super at
the price too. And the food-hard
to describe how great it was. We
started with the calamari frito
with seafood of all sorts and
the Caesar salad-divine-and
missed out on the wild mushroom
soup---going back. We had brick
chicken made right!!!!, the pork
tenderloin, and the tagliatelle
with veal ragu for
entrees-salmon was another
choice and it too sounded
amazing. There was a list of
desserts but all stopped with
the outrageous tiramisu. It was
a fantastic night!! Good for
Kevin.
We went to Vita for 5280 Week
and they did a very good job.
First-they offered the entire
menu-3 courses-no dessert but a
great way to show off all the
menu so people will come back-a
great idea. We had the shrimp 2
ways, the osso buco, and the
bruschetta for our first course.
Then we had the squash soup, the
wedge and the panzanella salads.
Entrees were sea bass, tuna and
flatiron steak. Dessert was an
add on and we had the chocolate
mousse. We went on a Tuesday
night-and all bottles of wine
were half off-another treat so
we tried a wine out of our
range!!! Our server was
excellent too.
TV was fun-only you won’t see it
on Wed. it was shown on Thurs as
the conference from the school
shooting took up the time. The
restaurants-for restaurant
week-were great. Parallel
Seventeen was fabulous, as was
Bistro One. Fogo de Chao—what a
steal if you can still get in!!
and Cuba Cuba was great and
Firenze below Parisi
incredible-we are going there
tonight-Saturday night.
We went to a party at Elway’s
downtown for Nude vodka-a John
Elway deal and he was there
along with the rest of the
world. It was a great party with
a fabulous buffet and lots of
fun.
We left and went to dinner at
Strings-it was mobbed—and
fabulous. The food, wine, and
service were great. We had the
prosciutto and white asparagus
salad, the poached shrimp, and
tomato bisque for starters. Then
we had the pasta course. Entrees
were divine-salmon, Cornish game
hen, and beef tenderloin with
great accompaniments. Desserts
were the crème brulee and
chocolate tart with passion
fruit gelato. What a treat.
Finally Deluxe Burger-E. Colfax
and Grape is open-and Dylan
Moore has done it!!! The best
burger, the very best tuna
burger-get the spicy one!!,
sweet potato chips homemade,
fries, salads, homemade
mustard-the best-and catsup, and
milkshakes, and chocolate chip
cookies-are made into ice cream
sandwiches. It is small, very
casual, order at the counter-and
just the best food. It
rocks-will see you there cuz on
my way back.
We went to Shanahan’s for
dinner—the valet, the hostesses,
the staff and servers-wow!!!
They are amazing. And then the
wine and food-it is spectacular.
The new chef has brought the
food to new heights and it was
wonderful. We had great bread
(and wine), and then fried
oysters, tuna tartar, and the
beet salad for starters. Every
dish was amazing. Then we had a
divine veal chop, the best
chicken, and perfect steaks-a
filet and strip-and crab
béarnaise. Sides were great-Lyonnaise
potatoes, mac and cheese, and
creamed corn. And if not enough,
we had the lemon layer cake. It
was just fabulous.
Another birthday lunch—lucky
me!!!! We went to Elway’s and it
was fabulous as always. 2 of us
had the blackened fish sandwich-mahi
mahi-I had my favorite potato
chips and he had cottage
cheese---the other lady had the
steak chili, very good too. We
loved it all including super
service. AND YES, JOHN ELWAY WAS
DINING A FEW TABLES AWAY.
The birthday might have had the
last party Friday night at
twelve. It was excellent. The
place was nice-and you could
even talk-till it filled up but
that was a while into the meal.
We had nice wine, great bread
and soup and a super salad for
starters. Grouper with Brussels
sprout hash, duck with red
cabbage and veal with spinach
were the entrees. The lemon cake
was the dessert. Service was
excellent.
Dana called about the Med in
Boulder—they said the tapas and
happy hour are fabulous, and
unbelievably reasonable-and
fun!! Get there.
Linda called about Restaurant
week-she went to Gabriel’s in
Sedalia, Fresh Fish Co. and
Perfect Landing—and loved them.
Stu tried to get into Strings—we
suggested he call and not only
use Open Table as sometimes more
are blocked off-and to try
Strings again. I also told him
about our fabulous dinner at
Prima-and to try it.
Gabe loves La Casa del Rae in
Arvada.
Irene had a fabulous lunch at
Strings and did Table 6 for
Restaurant Week and loved it.
Cathy went to Appaloosa Grill
across from the Pavilions and
had a great dinner.
Imbergamo called-and he went to
India’s Pearl-loved it and the
wine list and prices too-and
Rioja, and Squeaky Bean and said
it was great.
Charlotte loves Back Country
Pizza in the mountains.
David went to Shanahan’s and
said it was amazing-and get your
name in for the dinner.
The food, service, ambience—and
bar—all rock.
Rich went to 1515 and then to
Tag for 5280-said it was great.
He is going to Vesta tonight. He
thinks the smashburger at
Stevel’s Snappin Dogs is the
best.
Don wanted places to go near
Colorado and Mexico- we talked
about Seven 30 South, Cucina
Colore, Piatti,
Elway’s—specially at the bar
area in Cherry Creek—then a
caller suggested Locanda del
Borgo.
Diane had a fabulous 5280 dinner
at Jing and at Strings-and at
Elway’s Cherry Creek-all big
winners!!!
Sheri went to Le Chateau before
theater-it was amazing and so
was the service-and valet-along
with the food.
Jim went to Le Chateau for 5280
and said it was fabulous!!!
Phil wanted to know about
Smashburger-is it really
good.—Yes
Jerry went to Old Mill Brewery
in Littleton and loves the
burger—and he loves the Athenian
too.
Ron wanted ricotta wheat
pie-John told him he can find it
at dolce Sicilia on 32nd and
Wadsworth---and he said
everything else there rocks too.
Allison loves Café Jordano
And we were way out of time.
Thanks for listening and calling
