Squeaky Bean
When I walked into the bar like atmosphere of the
Squeaky Bean I was surprised they had such an
ostentatious menu complete with not-so posh prices on
everything. I was expecting a cheap bar that served bar
food as well as a happy hour priced drink menu. The
location may have been what was confusing, as it is in
an offsetting highlands neighborhood; not what one would
usually expect when looking for a fine dining
experience. Yet, I enjoyed the concept of an uptown
bar/restaurant even in the neighborhood setting. You
enter in a corner door with a patio on the left of the
building encased with a metal open rail and a
retractable awning. Since it was a neighborhood it was
quite secluded from traffic noise. It is just about that
time when patios are over packed with patrons so we were
not able to grab a seat outside. Inside the building the
main eye catching furniture is the large wooden bar,
which was practically empty. As this place has not yet
made a splash on the Denver restaurant scene it was easy
to get sat immediately.
To begin we dove in strong ordering a bottle of Frances
finest Cotes Du Rhone, Domaine Des Escaravailles. This
piquant wine set us up for the Duck Rilletes, which had
the texture of pâtė and was served with toasted
sourdough bread, and two jelly preservatives, which
tasted similar to peach and a seeded pomegranate.
Accompanying the duck we chose the “snack” potato and
gruyere fonduta which resembled more of a small meal
rather than a “snack.” This creamy delicious gourmet
cheese and potato mixture also came with a carbohydrate
dipper similar to the toasted sourdough, yet it was
softer grilled bread.
Now if you were looking for a lighter, more health
conscious selection the Beet salad would be an
appropriate choice. The size of the salad was perfect,
yet there were more ingredients than actual lettuce. I
would also suggest ordering the dressing on the side as
it was a bit overwhelming.
And to my favorite part, the entrée! Usually I am not a
tomato person, not based on taste only texture, yet I
enjoyed the tomato braised chicken thighs with a pine
nut and medjool date couscous, drizzled with a green
olive yogurt. The meal had a Mediterranean twist with an
American flare for presentation and taste.
Overall this was a great place to enjoy wine, fine food,
and friends for a surprisingly lower cost than the
extravagant fine dining restaurants I have come to know
and adore.
