FOOD AND FITNESS WITH SHIGEKO
by Shigeko Leveque

BE BRAVE!

I teach everyday. I teach a lot of classes to a wide variety of age groups. My youngest student is five years old, and the oldest is close to 75 years old. Some people have their conditions. I had a student who kept coming to my cardio kickboxing class through out her chemo sessions. Many of them come to my Yoga or Tai-Chi class to get strength back after their injuries.

I think all age groups have their own benefits. For younger crowds, they are full of energy, passion and very spontaneous! For the middle age group, their focus is just amazing. They don’t have much luxury for spare time because their everyday lives are pretty busy with work, family and many other things. They also have incredible strength and balance. For the older crowds, they know their body very well. They are very patient and consistent with everything they do. They are wise! And it is very similar to the people who have to deal with their conditions. They know how to modify and do their best.

During my school years, I played tennis for four to five hours every single day because I was on the tennis team. Ten years ago, I was trying really hard everyday to master Martial Arts. I would sometimes hurt, but I kept on trying and I somehow managed to survive from many injuries. About five years ago, I realized that I needed to work on my “inside body” not only my outside body. So, I started to spend more time on Yoga and Tai-Chi. I probably don’t have the same speed or endurance like I did 10 or 20 years ago, but my body could not be stronger than now. I also feel I have a great balance for my life.

“I’m too young to do this” or “I am too old to start to do this” …etc. You should not decide what you are going to do based on your age or your conditions. It’s not only for exercise; it is also our everyday lives.

If you start something at a young age, you have more chances to learn quickly (you can forget quickly, too!), and if you stick with it, it’s going to stay with you forever.

On the aging process or with conditions: Even if you loose strength or endurance, you instead have the ability to gain other things that you would normally not gain. You will be more disciplined, patient and wiser and the best part is your mind is much stronger than when you are younger.

If you loose something, you gain something. Isn’t it great? You never loose anything!

So, be curious!
BE BRAVE!

Shigeko was born and raised in Japan and moved to Colorado in 2000.

Her passion is teaching. She teaches Martial Arts (Tae Kwon Do, Kenpo and Kickboxing), Tai-Chi and Yoga on a daily basis.
She believes that it is extremely important to stay connected to your heart. And all the exercises she does is a bridge between the body and mind.

Shigeko and her mother are both nutritionists. So, of course, the food is a big part of her and her family's lives. She loves to explore any kind of new food.
As she learned about nutrition, she realized how important it is to eat the "right food". To her, eating should not only "taste good", it should be "good for your health".

She also enjoys photography, drawing, cooking, reading and taking care of her little cairn terrier, Ben. Shigeko loves to meet new people, and is drawn to other food and exercise enthusiasts

She updates her life on her blog everyday @ http://kickpop.exblog.jp/ Sorry, it's in Japanese, but you can still enjoy the pictures!
