The Dine & Dash: Ling & Louie’s
A wise prophet once envisioned a girl and boy that were birthed by dragons & raised by humans; destiny will bring the two together to make mouth watering food.
Scott M. Hill, MCFE, CC, Independent Food Writer
You like collecting stamps? You prefer reading an intellectually stimulating novel on a Friday night instead of going to a bitchin concert? What are you having for dinner? Your favorite I see; liver and onions, yuck! Well hot damn I’m not staying here for that! Let’s go out for dinner. What interests you? Avant Garde restaurants you say. Whoa Dexter! Calm down! I think that’s too big of a culture shock for you! We can still do something off-the-wall if you want. I heard about this restaurant in Stapleton called Ling & Louie’s; let’s do that instead.
Ling & Louie’s is not your typical Asian restaurant. They add flair to their service at no extra charge. I was trying to order, but sat there looking at the menu in awe. I should start from the top.
Hmm, what to get, what to get; I have starters, sushi, soups, salads, poultry, sliders, platters, seafood, rice and noodles, steak and pork, and grilled items to choose from. Christine came to take my order that I have not decided on yet. She gave me more time, but asked me what I wanted to drink. Oh boy! What to get, what to get; a draft beer, wine, or cocktail. I felt pressured, so I ordered water to get this lady off my back. Ok, now I can continue reading this dictionary.
I decided to order the drunken shrimp (14.49). What an interesting name; I wonder how they do it. Are live shrimp dropped in a Guinness filled tub and allowed to swim until they start bumping into each other? Nah, the shrimp are actually dipped into a thick beer-batter and deep fat fried. It’s served with a beer sauce on bed of fresh vegetables with rice on the side.
I sat at the table waiting for my entrée and listening to gentle music playing in the back ground. The kitchen was blocked off by a mini flowing water fall. Shrubbery and plants where everywhere. The strong presence of nature here conveys a soothing sensation all through my body.
The food arrived and to my surprise the small bowl in the center was on fire. Christine proceeded to drizzle the sauce over the shrimp and vegetables with a spoon; those items also ignited. As the plate was placed in front of me I watched the flames slowly die down. Wow, what b-e-a-utifully done presentation. The shrimp had a golden brown luminosity which stood out against a background of colorful vegetables. I dipped the shrimp in the beer sauce and expected a light flavor; they were warm and had a nice crispy crunch the moment I sunk my teeth in for that first bite. I got a light citrus flavor with an intense rum flavor; Christine didn’t burn out all the alcohol. I put the remainder of the sauce on the rice; that thinned out the flavor and complemented the rice. The vegetables were vibrant in color and taste. They were cut uniformly which really stood out.
I wanted to order a cocktail, but every time Christine came to the table I had my mouth full of food. She came over to take my plate, so I ordered a Thai Mai (6.50). This contains a blend of exotic rums and tropical juices. It arrived at the table in a tall, unusually shaped glass. Three-fourths are filled with a pulpy and bright juice. The mixture of rum was dark black; garnished with a pineapple slice on the rim. There should be a label on this drink. Pineapple, mango, and kiwi flavors were all noticeable. I actually saw the rum go into the glass, but I couldn’t taste it.
Overall I enjoyed my first experience and will be back. I’d encourage you to go to Ling & Louie’s to find out for yourself. I challenge you to appreciate the awesome plate presentations and potent drinks. Until we eat again; taste new foods, try new drinks, and enjoy life.
